What is the Best Gaming Computer…

The idea of the beat gaming computer often floats through the minds of gamers around the world. After all, in an industry where speed and graphics are everything, who wouldn’t want to own the best?

Sure, you could construct a list of computer components and find out what the best gaming machine is based on per specifications. Or, if you’re sane, you can take an alternate route by constructing the best gaming computer for you. What’s the difference? Well, the best gaming computer is going to cost you upwards of twenty thousand dollars (ouch), while the best gaming computer for you may only cost one or two thousand (or less, depending on how wisely you spend your money)
.

The best gaming computer fits your needs – not your wants. Sure, it would be great to have a Quad-SLI machine with four nVidia 8800 Ultras, all water cooled, and with a blazingly fast Quad Core Extreme processor to power it all … but who really needs that setup? The last time I checked, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion runs fine on a GeForce 8600, and you can pick one of those up for around $100.

When you’re looking for the best gaming computer, keep these simple hints in mind:

  • Consider what your machine will do. Are you really going to just play computer games with it, or are you going to listen to music, chat with your buddies, watch movies, and use the Internet? If you spend several thousand dollars on a computer, all of that money is going to go to waste on simple tasks like that.
  • Is 50MHz really worth it? In an age where we talk in terms of GHz and GB, is a few extra MHz or MB really worth it? Sure, you could spend an extra $200 on a graphics card that offers only a 50MHz clock increase or you could save that money and buy a printer, or a faster processor, or more RAM.
  • Is it worth it? The hardware you’re buying today is going to be outdated tomorrow, so you have to ask yourself: is it worth spending thousands of dollars on an SLI rig when, six months from now, nVidia will come out with a new top of the line card?

With those tips in mind, buying your ultimate gaming computer should be much easier on your wallet – and that computer will perform adequately enough to let you play all of the modern computer games.
