One of the most important parts of your security center on your computer should be your anti-virus program. There are literally hundreds of products out there to choose from. Some will take a nice toll on your finances every year while others will simply slow down your computer and still allow almost every thing through.
Today, keeping your system safe is not the way it was in years past. The crooks have gotten smarter and more sophisticated in the way that they try to spoof your user information and passwords. In addition, some of the Malware actually is geared to simply doing nothing but creating problems to your browser. Some of these problem apps will create a horrible surfing experience. So what is the best way to protect your computer? In the following paragraphs I will list a few of the best ways that you can keep yourself safe.
First, I will talk about the antivirus part of the protection. We have used and tested almost all of the big box brands of protection and none of them will catch every virus out there. The problem we found with many of them is that they slowed the computer down to a crawl. I really do not see the point in protection if the computer is unusable. This is partly due to the fact that the venders are trying to fit way too much into the programs. Many of this clutter is actually for marketing so they can say that their product does more then the other guys. I have seen some folks with Kasparsky have a computer that was almost totally unusable because it was so slow.
I have good news for everybody. Microsoft Security Essentials is not only free but it really does a great job of catching many of the virus threats out there today. In our tests, Security Essentials did at least as good if not better in protecting our systems. Here is the best part, the product has a very small footprint and will not slow down your computer. Microsoft really got it right when they devised this program.
Since no one product will catch everything, you need another product to supplement the Security Essentials (or any product for that matter). For your second line of defense we recommend Malwarebytes. This little gem is one of the best products out there and it has been for a very long time. Although you can get the free version and simply manually scan your computer weekly, we highly recommend getting the paid (Pro) version so you can have protection in real time as well. Malwarebytes is constantly working with most of the anti-virus vendors to ensure that their product is compatible. With the dual forces of Security Essentials and Malwarebytes, it will be really hard to infiltrate your system.
There is one more area that you should cover as well and again, it is a Malwarebytes product. The product is called Malwarebytes Anti Exploit. This small program has no settings or updates; it simply runs on your system totally unnoticed. This is one of the only products that will save you from such infections as the FBI virus and many java exploits. These are probably the most feared of the virus infections as they can often create a reformat situation on your computer. In addition, the virus can actually take control of your web cam. This one infection you do not want to get. Running this tiny app will not affect your computer speed at all. It is still in Beta but I have not found any issues with the program at all in our testing.
There you have it, the best of the best for keeping you safe. The best part is, it does not have to cost you an arm and a leg to do. So what are you waiting for, get yourself protected today!
