If you are like most people, you have about a zillion passwords. These passwords can get confusing and sadly, many folks rely on the memory of the computer to recall them. This is a very dangerous practice as if you do not have a record of your passwords; they can easily be erased and lost forever. If you cannot remember the password, you will have to reset it or have the software vendor reset it for you.
If you frequently forget your passwords or do not have them written down someplace, you need KeePass. Before I start, here is a word of caution: Never keep your passwords listed on your computer in a text or excel file. Only use programs that are designed for that purpose as they store the passwords in an encrypted file safe from prying eyes.
KeePass is actually an open source program whose code can be viewed by anybody. For this reason, KeePass is a secure program to use. You might wonder why is an open source software secure? It is because so many different programmers will change the code and that actually makes cracking the program difficult.
Once you have the program downloaded and installed, you will need to set up a master password. Adding new websites to your KeePass installation is relatively easy. First, open your program and set it aside where you can access it.
The next step is to find a suitable category such as Home or Bank etc. You can choose this category from the pane on the left. You can use the groups that are listed or you can create your own custom set of groups and sub groups.
When you are working in the main window, hit the Ctrl plus 1 key to begin a new entry. The entry fields will show places for your name, password and a host of other information. Fill out all the necessary information. You can use your existing password or you can let KeePass generate a password for you.
These passwords will generally be much harder for a hacker to crack. Using this feature is definitely recommended. Just remember to change your password in the applicable application.
When you want to use KeePass to sign into a secure website, simply open the program and navigate to the appropriate group and site name. Next, click the Open Url icon in the toolbar and the appropriate site will then open. You can now click on the entry and you can copy and paste the user name and password into the sign in field of the website.
KeePass also has a nifty auto type option that works with some sites. Simply click on the correct site in your KeePass program and then click on the field you want to populate in your browser. Next, use the Autotype option in KeePass. Your user name and password will then be filled in automatically, if the site supports it.
It might take a little getting used to but once you get the hang of it, KeePass can be a great addition to your list of utilities. Using KeePass is a safe and secure way to manage all of your passwords.
