With time, computers will often become slow. Sometimes the PC may stop working altogether. But many of these problems may not be major issues and can be fixed quite easily.
Clean the PC off unnecessary files
Some files on the computer are just a load on the system’s resources. Examples are temporary internet files, recycle bin files, system memory error dump files, etc. You can actually remove them without affecting the computer.
Go to Programs>Accessories> Disk Clean Up. Select the drive you want to clean and then run the Disk Cleanup tool. The system will show you how many files can be safely removed without harming the computer.
Clean the registry
Every time a program is uninstalled, some files remain behind. Examples are configurations, registry entries, etc. When such files pile up, the operating system slows down. There are many programs available on the internet, which you can choose from to clean the registry of these unwanted files.
Install an antivirus
Some viruses will make the system terribly slow. If your system has become slow suddenly, then it is probably infected with a virus. Many viruses are also dangerous. They can steal your personal details such as passwords (by key logging), download files to your computer without your knowledge, create a backdoor for other viruses and even track your movements online. Buy a good antivirus software either from the internet or your local computer services provider and run it regularly.
The PC is not booting into Windows
If your system is running Windows and if the PC suddenly stops booting into Windows, try booting it in the Safe Mode. Press the F8 key right when the computer tries to access the operating system and you will be booted into the Menu. Then choose Safe Mode from the dropdown list. If the system boots in Safe Mode, the problem is with something that will only work when you load normally, like graphic card drivers, spy ware applications, etc.
When the Safe Mode doesn’t load
If the Safe Mode is not booting, then it’s time to use the Start Up Repair tools. The Start Up Repair Tools can be accessed from the Advanced option under the Safe Mode. Alternatively, you can also use the windows installation disc to access the repair option.
System restore
The system restore is one of the best tools available to repair your system. Windows will automatically create a restore point for a particular date. Go back to the last date when the system was working properly and restore the system to that date.
Uninstall applications that you don’t need
The higher the number of applications, the greater is the chance that the PC will slow down. Make a list of applications that you can do without and uninstall them. After you uninstall them, use a registry cleaner to clear the system off remaining registry entries.
Load windows faster by trimming down start up applications
If your PC is taking longer time to load, try cutting down the list of applications that load when the PC starts up. You can use the MS Configuration Utility to choose the applications you want loaded when the PC starts.
