If you own an older Android based tablet or phone, you have probably heard about some of the many security issues that the OS exhibits. It has been quite a long time since the last Android update was released. Depending on the brand of tablet or phone that you have will determine when you actually receive the update on your device.
If you own the Nexus line of tablets, you will get the update first and most Nexus users are probably already set to go. Samsung was lagging behind and has just started updating their tablets. Please note that not all Samsung users will get the update at the same time. It is being rolled out in phases so that the update server does not get overloaded. When you manually try to update your Galaxy, you might get a message telling you that updates are released in the order that they are received please try again later. Eventually you will get the update to load. Just keep trying.
The new version of Jelly Bean comes with a list of security improvements and some changes to the look of your tablet. For example, the task bar has been moved from the bottom of the screen to the top of the screen, the HOME button is now conveniently located in the bottom center of the screen and I noted much improved overall speed throughout the device including the Internet. In addition, I have noticed better compatibility with sites such as You Tube.
Besides all the obvious enhancements, you will also see some changes in the settings part of the OS. They have added some new settings options as well as improved some of the existing ones. Another great addition is the full screen drop down that shows you all your existing notifications and quick access to many of the Tablet settings. To access this feature, simply swipe down from the very top of the screen and the notification window will open. To close, swipe back up from the bottom of the screen. This is a huge improvement over the old window that was in the lower right hand corner.
The new version also allows support for 5 more languages and has added fine-grained application permissions for security. This feature is hidden to the user. The update also includes file system write performance improvements, which you will notice right after doing the update.
Even with the release of the new version of Jelly Bean, Google is already working on the next operating system for Android. The new OS will be named Kit Kat, with the permission of Nestle and Hershey. There are no other details about this release. In addition, Jelly Bean 4.4 is also in the works with no tentative release date as of yet.
