Anytime a new version of Windows arrives the first thing we notice is the bugs and little quirks in the operating system that seem to slow us down. The good news is that there are several things that can be done to increase the speed of the new Windows 8 operating system. In some cases you can increase the speed of the operating system by up to 50% just by performing a few simple tasks.
Disable Windows 8 Applications and Services
To obtain more system speed you can disable many of the applications that are running in the background or at start up. You will notice a dramatic increase in your systems performance by simply by disabling these unnecessary applications and services. Most of the services and applications that are running on your system can safely be removed or disabled without causing any harm to your computer or interfere with how it operates. One thing to keep in mind is that your browsers will use a lot of memory; Firefox is one of the worst culprits for hogging memory and slowing down your systems performance.
In order to disable applications in your systems start up you can follow the simple steps below:
- Click Start
- Type in MSCONFIG In the Start Search Bar
- Hit Enter (You may have to choose continue to allow the system utilities to open)
- Select Start Up Tab
- Select Items To Uncheck Or Choose Disable All
- Hit Enter (You can choose to restart now or allow it to take effect on next start up)
If you would like to disable an application that is currently running on your system you can hold down the Ctrl and Alt Keys while tapping the Del key, then select task manager and select Processes in the tabs at the top of the box then highlight any application you want to end process on.
Speeding Up IO Requests
In Windows 8 you can gain more performance by using flash cards. These will work as additional RAM for your system and since the flash cards have such high speed they offer faster access and better performance than a hard disk drive.
Speeding Up File Access
For a simple Windows 8 tweak that will offer faster access to your files, try changing the Mouse Hover Time, by changing the value to 100 you will increase your taskbar speed and in turn increase the access time to your files.
Tweaking Tools For Windows 8
You can find a variety of tools on the internet as well as on the Microsoft’s download page to help you increase your systems performance and speed. Tools for over clocking your systems CPU can be used to safely give your system a boost. You can use benchmarking to determine just how fast your system really is and if the tweaks you are performing are in fact helping increase the performance. Always ensure that you backup your system files before performing any tweaks to your system. Any time you change your systems registry there is a risk of lost information, so be safe and backup first.
