In the world we live in, bad guys are always trying to take things that do not belong to them. More and more dishonest folks that do not want to make an honest living or those that are trying to support a serious drug habit think nothing of destroying your property and taking the things you worked all your life to get. There are things you can do that will greatly improve your chances of keeping the bad guys away from your stuff.
Probably one of the best deterrents is to have lots of video cameras around your home located in areas where they are visible to any would be intruders. There are several different types of cameras you can install. The easiest is to use a USB camera connected directly to your computer. If you go this route, you will have to purchase an outdoor camera enclosure to house it in since these cameras are not weatherproof.
If you want to watch your camera online or broadcast it over the Internet, you will need to use Windows Media Encoder (if you are using XP) or you can use a free streaming service called Cam Streams to get your camera online. Once your camera is connected, you can access the camera from any web browser. This method is the least expensive route to go and will work well for the price.
The second method is to use an IP camera connected to your network. IP cams come in all types and many are rated for outdoor use. Some even come with software so you can access them on your phone or computer. This method works great if you have no interest on using the camera as a web cam on your website. You can also buy entire kits that contain several cameras, a DVR and software. Since the cameras are wireless, the price for this type of setup will be a bit steep but you will not have to run wires throughout your house.
The third method is to install a CTTV system that is wired. You can usually find kits that are reasonably priced and include the cameras, software and DVR. There will be more work involved in this type of setup since you will have to run the wires throughout the house and probably though your attic. Once the install is finished, you will have an extremely reliable security monitoring system that will last for many years.
The final method is probably the most expensive in the long haul but it will require only minimal work on your part. Companies such as Comcast and ATT offer security services that include cameras that can be viewed from anywhere including your home. These services will also include the ability to turn your lights on and off as well. In some cases, you can even control your thermostat. The nice thing about this is that the company does all the legwork for you. They do all the installing that is required for your system. The monthly fees can really add up over time making it an expensive choice. If you are able and willing to pay the price, by all means take this route.
As you can see, you have multiple choices in attempting to secure your home. Whether you go the DYI route or have a professional company install their equipment, you will have a deterrent and some peace of mind when you leave your home unattended.
