It happens to all of us from time to time, you are working on the Internet and suddenly without warning you get a “Page Cannot Be Displayed” warning or your browser crashes. You wait a minute and try again and everything now seems fine. If this happens once in a great while you should not worry since occasional disconnects are normal and do happen. If you are trying to regain your connection on a regular basis then something is likely causing the problem and it could be anything from Malware to interference.
The first thing that you need to determine is if the disconnects are just coming from the Wi Fi or from your wired connections as well. If both are disconnecting the problem likely lies with the ISP signal and this article will not apply to you. If it is only the Wi Fi then there are several things that you can do to diagnose the problem.
The fact is that many routers suffer from interference from other sources. We have seen computers that are located right next the router suffer intermittent disconnects from the Internet. This is especially true with routers that are older. Consider this, your home is filled with electronic devices that are displaying invisible radio waves throughout the residence. If any of these frequencies come close to the frequency your router is working on your signal is going to be affected. It has also been reported that utility crews, police and fire vehicles can cause interference with their powerful 2 way radios.
Another reason for dropped Wi Fi signals is simple overcrowding of the system. This type of scenario is usually in place in environments such as apartments, condos, dorms and office buildings. Often times we get calls for dropped signals and there are so issues with the computer. In fact in most cases the computer is not the problem. In fact there are times when there is nothing that can be done because the cause is from simple interference.
Malware and virus infections are another reason that connection issues arise. If this is the cause you will have other symptoms rather then just the connection issues. You will likely have pop ups and an overall slow computer. In cases such as this you should seek a professional technician to clean your system out. It should be noted that if you are trying to connect to a web page and the wireless drops right in the middle of a request, this will slow down the entire computer for at time. Folks often mistake this symptom to that of a virus infection or a computer error issue.
So if you experience disconnects from your wireless on a regular basis, try moving tour computer or router to a different location. Sometimes moving as little as a foot can make a dramatic difference. If that does not help, try power cycling all your equipment. First, shut off your computer (s). The next step is to unplug your router and your modem. Leave everything off for about 2 minutes. Plug everything back in reverse order starting with the modem. Once you turn your computer back on, test your connection. This simple trick will often remedy a buggy connection and no other diagnostics is needed.
