Every now and then we do some testing to see which search engines are giving users the best results. We take a lot of factors into consideration and one important factor is how easy it is to find the official sites of common downloads like Firefox and Adobe Flash Player.
It is well known that Google still dominates the search engine world. This is mostly because of association and not because of good searches. Google is widely used simply because of the name. The first thing most of say is “let me Google that”. It is much easier to say and comes out more naturally then “Let me Bing that’ or “let me Yahoo that”. With that said, is it actually the best search engine to use?
When doing a Google search, you will often find the biggest companies on the top of the searches. Sure they are big companies but there are many smaller companies that will actually offer you a better value. If you do the same search in Bing, you will find quite a different array of choices. You will find a mix of both large and small companies together. The mix is refreshing in that it gives you more choices, not just the big corporations but smaller companies that can often offer better prices and a better value.
According to experts, Google has the lowest amount of searches then it has had in many years. It is rapidly loosing traffic from Yahoo and Bing. It is no longer the great giant it used to be. I believe this has come as a result of the many changes it has made it the past couple of years that took many great searches and put them at the bottom when they deserved to be in the front. This is the primary reason clients are going elsewhere for their searches. We are finding that more and more of our clients are not using Google anymore.
Another reason is ease in finding the official site for common downloads such as Adobe Flash and Firefox. When you do a search with Google, it is sometimes hard to figure out which is the official download page. This is how many folks will get a virus infection. If you go to a page that is not an official page, you will often get more then you bargained for. When you do that same search in Bing, the official site is clearly marked on the right hand side of the page. It makes it much easier to get the correct download.
One of the reasons we have seen an increase in the share of Yahoo is that it is now teamed up with Firefox. Since Firefox is a widely used browser, I believe more and more folks are going to be migrating away from Google in the coming weeks and months. There is an added bonus if you use the Bing search engine. Once you sign up for Bing Rewards. you begin to accumulate points for searching. These points can be redeemed for many prizes such as gift certificates, extra space on One Drive plus more. Google cannot do that! Why not get paid for your searches. It is a win win for everybody!
So the next time you are planning on looking for the latest weather or maybe a place to get your computer fixed, use Bing or Yahoo and you will be pleasantly surprised!
