One of the biggest complaints we get from customers is that their computer is slow. There are many reasons for this and usually it is not something you can diagnose yourself. The truth is, many issues related to speed are often caused by your Internet speed. Often time’s folks will go out and buy a brand new machine and notice that the new machine is just as slow as the old one.
In this case scenario, it is likely related to your Internet speed. When a computer is trying to open a webpage or other Internet item, the system is actually working quite hard. When an Internet connection cannot be found or if it is very slow, the entire computer will slow down to a crawl or maybe even freeze.
If you are a movie watcher, you are going to need lots of bandwidth and a high cap on your Internet account. I have seen many folks trying to watch Netflix and then complaining that the movies are either jumping or buffering. In almost every case this is not the fault of the computer. This is almost always an Internet issue.
What is happening is that the movie is playing faster then what your connection can download. Once the playback meets the place where you are downloading from, buffering will occur. This is built in feature that pauses the video until enough has downloaded to again allow playback. In some cases, this process could be excessive. There are several things you can do. The first thing would be to cycle your modem and router (if present). First, shut down your computer.
The next step would be to unplug tour router. Next, unplug or shut off your modem. Let them stay off for about 3 minutes and then start everything back up in reverse order. Start with the modem and be sure to allow it enough time to initialize. Next boot up the router if you have one and wait till it is fully booted and all the lights are stabilized. Now turn on your computer. Give the system time to stabilize and try playing your movie again.
If after performing the above steps your movies and Internet still seem slow, it is time to call your provider and either have your line checked or get an upgrade. If after all this you are still having problems, call a professional computer tech to be sure you do not have any virus infections.
If a virus infection is the culprit, you will usually see decease in speed in both the Internet connection and the computer files. You will also often see pop up messages and be redirected to advertising websites. Sometimes your browser will be hijacked and you will be redirected to websites that you do not want. Spyware is the leading cause of browser malfunction and redirects. In extreme cases, you might loose your connection to the Internet completely.
As you can see, there are numerous reasons for a slow computer but the first thing you should check is your Internet. It is the easiest thing to test and usually can de done in just a few minutes.
