Choosing The Best Monitor For Your Computer, Size Matters!

What is the one thing all computers have in common? They all require a monitor to view the contents of what you are attempting to display. If you own a laptop or a tablet, computer-monitorthere is very little you can do as far as an upgrade goes. If you own a desktop computer, you can upgrade till your hearts content.

Essentially the definition of a monitor is an electronic visual display for computers. The display of most modern computer monitors is made up of a thin film transistor liquid crystal (TFT-LCD) material. Some of the newest screens may use an LED backlight. Today, screens are optimized for HD quality graphics and have numerous ways to connect to your computer.

Often time’s monitors will also contain small built in speakers for ease in hooking up and to prevent clutter on your desk. They usually do not have the greatest sound but if all you do is watch an occasional video, the small speaker will do the job.

Computer monitors are always measured from corner to corner when you are trying to determine your monitor size. In years past, monitors were square and had the same dimensions in both width and height. Today, most monitors are wide screen and have a wider footprint then they are high. This is done to accommodate the wide screen footprint of most movies and videos. The screen size, however, it is still measured from corner to corner.

Most modern monitors have 2 ways to connect to your computers video card. You have the standard VGA connector and the newer DVI Digital connector. You will have to check your video card to sere what type of connector that you have. Some video cards only have digital outputs and you will have to make sure your new monitor supports that. Some of the lower priced models only have a VGA connector. Pay the extra price and be sure your new monitor has both.

The size monitor you purchase is something you will need to consider carefully. Remember, the larger the monitor the higher the native resolution will be. When you are running at a high resolution, things like text are going to appear much smaller. I have seen many people buy a large monitor and run the resolution higher then it is supposed to be so it is easier to see the text. This action is counterproductive and can create some problems when displaying certain programs. It can also create a fuzzy image that is not clear to look at. If you need to view larger fonts and features it is best to stay with a smaller monitor. It is always important to run your monitor at the native resolution that is recommended.

When choosing a monitor, it is always a good idea to see the monitor in action at your favorite store. When you see several of them displayed together, it is easier to compare the picture quality. Not all are created equal.

If you need a new monitor or just want to upgrade your old one, making wise decisions on size and quality can lead you to a very satisfying visual experience. I cannot really recommend one brand over another but I can say from experience that HP monitors offer years of trouble free service. The monitor that lasted me the least number of years was a Dell monitor. The backlight went out after only 3 years of use. Just stick with a name brand and you cannot go wrong!
