4 Tips for Protecting All of the Information on Your Company’s Computers

In today’s world, most employees don’t give computer security a second thought, which can create enormous problems. If a computer isn’t protected properly, it could lead to protect your company's informationidentity theft, data leaks or something even worse. This will cost your company time and a lot of money. To prevent these disasters from happening in the first place, here are four things that you need to do.

#1 Update Your Computers

Modern-day computer operating systems will alert you when it’s time to update your computer. If your company is using outdated operating systems such as Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows ME, it’s time to upgrade. These versions are outdated and are considered insecure. However, if your computers are running on newer systems, always make sure you make it a habit to install updates immediately.

#2 Anti-virus Software

No computer should run without any sort of anti-virus software. While newer computers will come equipped with a trial version, it’s going to be just that — a trial. If you can’t afford to buy the software after it has expired, consider free options online, such as AVG, Avast, Avira or Comodo. This software is going to help protect your computer from trojans, hacker tools, various viruses and worms. A good piece of software will have a real-time database, constant updates, and it will be able to scan your computer daily.

#3 Backup Your Data

If you were to lose everything on your computer today, it probably wouldn’t be a pretty picture. Data can be lost because of faulty hard drives, viruses, and so forth. Today, a CD shouldn’t be the only thing you use when backing up your sensitive data. Instead of using just a CD, consider other options, such as cloud hosting, where you can back up your data online, and external hard drives that you can store in a secure place. Make it a habit to back up your data at least once a week.

#4 Firewall

Lastly, always make sure that your computer is using a firewall. A firewall is designed to help block hackers from entering your computer. As long as the firewall is properly configured with your router, your data should be protected.

Aside from following these tips, also make sure that your employees know how to protect themselves while using a company computer. Encourage them to use complex passwords. Never write anything sensitive down and consider teaching them how to use the Internet safely. By taking the steps to prevent disasters from happening in the first place, you can be assured that your workplace will be a safer place.
